The Feast of St. Peter Baptist, the Principal Patron of the Archdiocese of Caceres, will be celebrated on February 7, 2010, Sunday. This, the reminder issued by the Archdiocesan Chancellor Rev. Fr. Allan Roy E. Remo on Monday, February 1, through a bulletin sent to all priests, deacons and religious groups.
Fr. Remo stated in the bulletin that on Sunday, February 7, 2010, the Liturgy that is proper to St. Peter Baptist and the Liturgy of the Hours and the Office of Readings proper to the said Principal Patron are to be used.
With the bulletin is the prayer to St. Peter Baptist which may be recited on that day after the Post Communion Prayer and also the short write up on the life of the saint which you may use in your homilies.
Peter Baptist was born in Spain in the year 1542. After the completion of his studies and ordination to the priesthood, he set out for the Orient to preach the Gospel.
For many years he worked in the Philippine Islands. He founded the towns of Pakil, and Longos in the Province of Laguna; Cagsawa, and Oas in the province of Albay; and Quipayo, Baao, Libmanan and Buhi in the province of Camarines Sur.
In the year 1593 he was sent with five other friars to Japan where he labored zealously converting many to the faith, building churches and a hospital. Due to the rise of religious and political controversies in the region, Peter Baptist’s apostolic activities were interrupted and he was arrested.
Amidst the jeers of the populace he was taken to Nagasaki where he and his companions together with the three members of the Society of Jesus and fifteen Franciscan Tertiaries were executed by crucifixion. They achieved the glory on martyrdom on February 5, 1597.
